Oil is used as a lubricant in mechanical constructions and hydraulic systems. At present there are no methods for reusing or recycling oil in Sweden. Oil therefore becomes waste, waste oil, once it has served its purpose, lost its lubrication properties or has too high a content of water or slurry.

Waste oil is collected from households, workshops, municipalities and other industrial facilities in Sweden. Collection, handling and processing require permits, special equipment and competence.

The waste oil is treated at a small number of processing plants, where water and slurry are separated and the oil is quality-assured.

The treated waste oil, Recovered Fuel Oil (RFO), is an alternative fuel that is particularly suitable for the cement industry. Cementa has a special permit for the use of RFO as fuel.

The fuel is transported in tankers by road or sea to the cement factory, where it is stored in embanked tanks. Each delivery is checked on arrival against defined quality and safety criteria.
